Danseuse éblouissante de kuchipudi, style traditionnel indien, Shantala s’est également ouverte aux autres formes de danse, travaillant avec Maurice Béjart et plus récemment avec Pina Bausch. Naturellement, cette interprète aux aptitudes infinies, en est venue à signer son propre spectacle contemporain, Namasya, une collection de quatre soli entrecoupés de signatures vidéos d’Alexandre Castres. Dans les coulisses du Tanztheater de Wuppertal, Shantala s’est inspirée du souffle créatif de Pina Bausch pour donner à voir une danse en robe longue et gestuelle déliée. Ushio Amagatsu a composé Ibuki pour Shantala, solo ciselé magnifié par un beau travail des bras. La danseuse Shantala s’est faite chorégraphe le temps de Shift ; enfin sa propre mère, Savitry Nair lui a offert Smarana presque entièrement donné de dos. Comme un songe chorégraphique, un enchantement aux influences indiennes. La reprise de Namasya, créé au Théâtre des Abesses, s’imposait dès lors. Philippe Noisette |

Already a dazzling dancer of Kuchipudi, a traditional Indian style, Shantala has also opened up to other dance forms, working with Maurice Béjart and more recently with Pina Bausch. This infinitely skilled interpreter has naturally come to sign her own contemporary piece, “Namasya”, a collection of four soli interspersed with video art by Alexandre Castres. In the wings of the Tanztheater, Wuppertal, Shantala drew her inspiration from Pina Bausch’s breath of creativity to bring forth a piece rich in fluid gestures performed in a long dress. Ushio Amagatsu has composed “Ibuki” for Shantala, a minutely detailed solo brought to perfection by beautiful arm work. The dancer has turned choreographer to imagine “Shift”. Finally her mother, Savitry Nair, has given her “Smarana”, performed almost entirely with her back to the audience, as in a choreographic dream, an enchantment influenced by India. “Namasya, simply had to be revived at the Théâtre des Abbesses.
