the soul of Uzbekistan The shash moqam is a classical form of singing of Persian and Arabic origin, which was already highly priced at the Emirís court in Bukhara. Monâjât Yulchieva is the shash moqamís most precious gem, with her ample, velvety alto voice, set in a musical casket which calls to mind Persian miniatures and oriental rugs. One can only yield to the charm of her haunting love chants, either secular or religious, as she attempts ìto sing from the heart, to sing not with oneís voice but with the torments of oneís soulî.
