A TOTALLY FREE INTERPRETATION OF BÉRÉNICE. STUNNING!

Who is Bérénice? Very few figures from ancient times have inspired as many artists as the Jewish princess from the 1st Century of the Common Era. Her relationship with the Emperor Titus epitomizes the tension between the force of passionate love and reason of State. In 1670, Racine’s play achieved the status of a monument: five acts, all written in verse. Today Romeo Castellucci has taken on the work and focused on the loneliness of the broken-hearted woman abandoned by the man she loves, only to abandon him later herself. Castelluci, the master of visual drama, chose Isabelle Huppert, the master of actors, to take on the role, giving her a monologue of powerful solitude where the voice is then abandoned. Who could fail to succumb to the beauty of the voice articulating words concealed in the eminently human tale and to such a spectacular work of art?
