By means of mentally handicapped professional performers and actors, “Disabled Theater” experiments with new ways of making theatre.
"Disabled Theater", created in collaboration with Theater HORA - a company composed by mentally handicapped actors - questions theatre on the basis of their presumed disabilities. By placing on stage performers who are usually forced to its margins, Jérôme Bel discovers new ways of understanding their condition, without calculation or preconceived ideas. Throughout the show, eleven actors answer in turn to the director's instructions with more or less discipline. Afterwards, they carry out a choreography they designed. Their peculiarities, as they're placed in this particular dramaturgy context, don't appear to be the sign of their impotence but a spontaneous deconstruction of scenic standards. Jérôme Bel answers to the political impossibility of conceiving mental illness by implementing its experimental potential.
