Ensemble Shamss
Kaykhosro Pournazeri, Homayoun Shajarian
Few musical ensembles can boast of having been around as long as Shamss. The ensemble founded by the master of the tanboor lute Kaykhosroh Pournazeri in the early 1980s has not only braved the twists and turns of history, but is now one of the jewels of Iranian musical art, able to constantly reinvent itself. It finds its creative inspiration in the radiant figure of Shams-i-Tabrizi, the wandering dervish who initiated Rumi (the 13th century Sufi mystic). In Kermanshah, the ancestral home of the Pournazeri dynasty, one finds the repertoires of secular Kurdish music and the ritual music of the Ahle Haqq (“People of Truth”) religious order. The resonance of the tanboor is the quintessence of this spiritual temperament that now dazzles on world stages. Accompanied by his brilliant heirs Sohrab and Tahmoures, Kaykhosroh Pournazeri is joined by Homayoun Shajarian, the most celebrated singer of the new generation. An eminently poetic evening, under the sign of transmission.
