Ben Duke
Juliet & Romeo
WHAT IF ROMEO AND JULIETTE HAD SURVIVED TO LIVE OUT THEIR LOVE STORY? IT IS TIME TO IMAGINE SHAKESPEARE’S HEROES GOING THROUGH THEIR MID-LIFE CRISIS. BEN DUKE’S MORDANT DANCE-THEATER PIECE TRACES A FINE PATH BETWEEN LAUGHTER AND TEARS.
Can romance survive a mid-life crisis? Juliette and Romeo look back over the past and their once passionate love, attempting to understand what has happened. The problem is that all those plays, all that music, and all those ballets named after them keep presenting them with their love story, a perfect love story as seen by others. Shakespeare’s verse and domestic rows have the two performers giving a consummate rendition of Ben Duke’s sharp work and smart humor.
