BORIS CHARMATZ
TANZTHEATER WUPPERTAL PINA BAUSCH + TERRAIN • Liberté Cathédrale • French première
SOME THIRTY DANCERS ARE FEATURED IN THE FIRST ORIGINAL WORK CHOREOGRAPHED BY BORIS CHARMATZ FOR THE TANZTHEATER WUPPERTAL WHERE HE IS THE NEW DIRECTOR. BODIES FORMING THE GROUP ARE CROSSED BY SOUNDS OF BELLS AND ORGAN, VOICE AND SILENCE.
Boris Charmatz has an unusual relationship with venues that combine grand scale and numbers. Vast space and powerful sound form the cathedral, both a physical construction and an imaginary setting, melding and uniting the features. The voice rises beyond the vault, waves of frequencies fill the building, echoing, while the strict cadence of vibrations on metal stands as a call to the faithful. Voice, organ, silence and bells determine the structure of the choreography, segment after segment, like blocks shaping elemental matter. Liberté Cathédrale could be described as half-way between a Gregorian version of pogo dancing and the madding crowd, a quest for physical expression taken from religion, and able to bring together bodies in contact.
