50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CARNATION REVOLUTION
World music - Portugal
A DAY OF PARTY AND PORTUGUESE MUSIC TO CELEBRATE THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CARNATION REVOLUTION.
At 00:20 on 25 April 1974, José Afonso's song "Grandôla Vila Morena" was broadcast on Radio Renascência: the final signal for the coup d'état against the Salazar dictatorship was given. At the end of the day, dictator Marcelo Caetano - who succeeded Salazar in 1968 - was deposed, marking the end of Europe's longest dictatorship, 48 years. During this period, many artists (some of them exiles) campaigned against the regime and its oppression: Sophia de Mello Breyner, Mário Cesariny, José Mário Branco, José Afonso, Luis Cília, Maria Teresa Horta... It is to these artists that we wish to pay tribute by bringing together the young Portuguese scene that is its heir. An opportunity to talk about youth and memory, freedom and poetry, with concerts, debates, readings and arts from all over Portugal.
