A GRAND FIGURE FOR THE GUMBE IN A CONCERT COMBINING LOCAL TRADITION WITH A QUARTET FOR THE VOICES AND VIBRATIONS OF GUINEA-BISSAU.
Paradis du gumbe
Guinea-Bissau, a tiny country in West Africa, has a range of traditional music and a style characterized by the gumbe drum. The best loved artist of Guinea-Bissau is Manecas Costa, a brilliant guitarist who writes, composes and performs his own works. He brings his individual style to the catchy beat of the gumbe with his polyrhythmic water drum, his special dancing style, complex guitar lines and his own words and social commentary in Creole, the language banned under colonial rule by the Portuguese. Manecas, together with his magnificent quartet for voice, strings and percussion, will present an original concert of compelling gumbe music at the Théâtre des Abbesses.
