JAN MARTENS
VOICE NOISE • Premiere
AN ODE TO DANCE, TO EQUALITY AND FREEDOM FOR WOMEN, FOR THE BODY AND THE MIND.
Start with six dancers (women or men) and thirteen songs (popular or recent), written by women between 1935 and 2023. The songs from a range of countries from India to Norway, and including political songs from America, combine to form a microcosm of the human race. The response in dance is from Jan Martens, a sculptor of feelings, movements and physical states, bringing festive atmospheres capable of bending time. Each person, each body, from the smallest to the tallest, can dance with the same freedom and significance either as a group or in breathtaking solos conjuring up tales of love and war. VOICE NOISE has been designed as a tribute to women, but also provides every member of the audience with a documentary report presenting the lyrics to the songs and eye-witness testimony, as female composers and lyricists address art, life and the status of women. The artistic venture is perfect, generous and never didactic.
