LES ABÎMÉS
Catherine Verlaguet / Bénédicte Guichardon
A SUBTLE TALE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND HEALING, PRESENTING A HUMAN APPROACH TO A DELICATE SUBJECT AND A SOURCE OF HOPE.
The boys who have been damaged [Les Abîmés] are two brothers persecuted by their violent father. After months in a children’s home, Ludo and P’tit Lu went back to the family home, but the situation was no better and their mother could not do anything about it. Child welfare workers took P’tit Lu again, but Ludo ran away. Nora, a youth worker, taught P’tit Lu how to sew. Ludo’s best friend Faïza taught him to play the piano.
In shades of blue as the dominant color, the two brothers on stage are now adults looking back at their childhood and their sometimes vague recollections. The actors are very close to the audience and mix narrative and dialogue to tell their story, a story focusing on the human side of the characters, of the two brothers forming a duo in an intense relationship, and also highlights the kindness of the two girls extending a helping hand. As Catherine Verlaguet
shows in the magnificent text, it is possible for light to make its way through crevices and flaws.
