HOW DO OLDER PEOPLE EXPERIENCE LOVE AND MAKING LOVE? THE PEOPLE IMMEDIATELY CONCERNED GIVE A DELICATE AND POIGNANT ANSWER TO THE QUESTION.

The widespread belief that older people have no libido is nicely proven wrong in this original and very human work. After working on a project introducing different forms of artistic experimentation into aged care centers, Mohamed El Khatib realized how these centers could cast light on an unseen aspect of the life of the older generation. It was moving to hear the private stories they shared with him, so he extended an invitation to women and men aged between 75 and 102, asking them to be part of the performance relating their love stories in The Secret Life of Older Citizens. Growing old means facing up to society’s critical gaze, seeing the physical decline of the body, and the gradual loss of independence, but in spite of all this, love prevails, as does desire when sexuality finds new forms and at a different pace, with its own time scale and subtle intimacy.
