Le Funambule
Jean Genet, Philippe Torreton • Creation
AN ACTOR, AN ACROBAT, A MUSICIAN, EACH ONE RENDERING THE INTENSE LANGUAGE OF JEAN GENET IN THE ALCHEMY OF A MUSICAL SCORE ENCOMPASSING ALL FIVE SENSES.
Here is one of the most beautiful love songs by Jean Genet, one written for his young lover, acrobat Abdallah Bentaga whose tightrope walking defied the force of gravity and death, yet ultimately brought his life to a tragic end. The commanding text of great incantatory force, ranging from dark to light, is spoken by Philippe Torreton who has tackled the text that has often resisted attempts to render it on stage as its power of exaltation overwhelms any performance standards and setting. The brilliant actor who has worked alongside so many distinguished figures of both theater and film and captivated every kind of audience, is also a wordsmith. Here he has to grapple with the ardent and fiery language of Genet in a text that suffers no approximation, where both the risk run by the tightrope walker and the poet’s voice require a radical response in a performance of the utmost authenticity.
