LE SONGE D’UNE NUIT D’ÉTÉ
William Shakespeare, Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota
BROKEN HEARTS AND MAGIC SPELLS BY NIGHT IN AN ODE TO THE POWER OF THE IMAGINATION, OF LOVE AND OF THEATER.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a dream both mysterious and bewitching, a beguiling frolic combining heartfelt passion and magical enchantment. The timeless play captivates minds, taking us into a world where any distinction between things real and things imaginary will soon fade. A whirlwind display of expressions of love and conflict features the young characters in their struggle to escape from obstacles to their passion, and so they find themselves embroiled in a comedy of errors of ever-increasing confusion and emotional turmoil. But there is more than lovers’ intrigues and quarrels, for A Midsummer Night’s Dream is an invitation to explore the innermost secrets of our imagination, and not everything is a dream. There are indeed any number of places or worlds that appear, one after the other, coming together only to fall apart, in opposite directions and with such momentum that top and bottom, inside and outside are constantly being reversed in both space and sentiment. Are we seeing a dream or the real world, or could this be the dawning of a new world?
