WHO’S AFRAID OF REPRESENTATION ?
Rabih Mroué / Lina Majdalanie
USING BODY ART FOR AN ORIGINAL PRESENTATION OF PARALLELS BETWEEN A CRISIS-RIDDEN COMMUNITY AND INDIVIDUAL DARING IN CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC CREATION.
Their names are Chris Burden, Orlan, Marina Abramovic and Gina Pane, the names of body artists recorded in a catalog. A large screen is set center stage, then a man and a woman draw lots. The woman is chosen first and opens the catalog at page 33; seeing the name of Gina Pane, she then has 33 seconds to describe a performance by the artist. The fun part of this original work by Rabih Mroué, which he performs with Lina Majdalanie, must not be misleading. When it is his turn, he has to tell the story of Hassan Mamoun, a civil servant in Lebanon who killed ten people. Rabih Mroué addresses the issue of body artists’ self-inflicted violence, and of the violence that often strikes his own country, tackling controversial issues related to representation in a crisis-ridden society made up of different communities and where individualism is seen as a threat.
