L’Éden Cinéma
Marguerite Duras, Christine Letailleur
AN EMBLEMATIC MARGUERITE DURAS PLAY RECEIVES A POWERFUL STAGING BY CHRISTINE LETAILLEUR.
Standing downstage, Suzanne and Joseph describe a childhood shaped by the battles of their mother, whose plans were ruined by the corruption of the colonial administration. Arriving in French Indochina in 1912 as a teacher, the mother supplements her income by playing piano in a Saigon movie theater. She uses her savings to obtain a land concession in view of farming it. But every year the harvest is ruined by the sea. With L’Éden Cinéma, Marguerite Duras returned to this story she had already told in Un barrage contre le Pacifique (The Sea Wall) and put it on stage. Christine Letailleur’s sensitive and finely constructed staging leads us into the half-light of memories all the more stirring because they are so intensely emotional
