Portrait N°1 : l'acteur fragile
Mohamed El Khatib, Éric Elmosnino • CIE ZIRLIB / FRANCE CULTURE
A CONTEMPORARY VERSION OF THE “PARADOX OF ACTING.”
His name is Éric Elmosnino. He speaks a text facing the audience. This text is about him, but he didn’t write it. It was written by Mohamed El Khatib. By playing with the double discrepancy connected with the fact of telling your own story but using someone else’s words, Mohamed El Khatib offers his own version of what Diderot described as the “paradox of acting.” By doing this, he puts the actor in a situation both crystal clear and complex in that it requires him to be himself while being someone else, since the audience never knows exactly which of the two is speaking. Coming from an actor who got involved in theatre nearly by chance “to impress a girlfriend” and wound up playing Serge Gainsbourg in a biopic, this balancing act reveals a virtuosity as discreet as it is remarkable
