Tierras del sud
Laida Azkona Goñi, Txalo Toloza-Fernández • STUDIO
IN THE SOUTH OF ARGENTINA, THE MAPUCHE’S DESPERATE FIGHT TO DEFEND THEIR LAND AGAINST PREDATORY MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS.
Investors are preying on Puelmapu, the ancestral territory of the Mapuche people in the heart of Patagonia. Over the last several years, major wealth holders have acquired up to twenty percent of the land in this region in the south of Argentina. Laida Azkona Goñi and Txalo Toloza-Fernández investigated in the area to determine what geopolitical prize justified these untimely acquisitions at the expense of the indigenous people facing daunting difficulties to defend their rights. In this performance, they go back to the roots of the predatory behavior that was initiated a century ago and culminated in the 1990s with the appropriation of land by a multinational corporation in the Benetton Group. Covering speculation, mass tourism, mining projects, and criminalization of protestors, Tierras del Sud creates a vivid picture of the Mapuche’s desperate battle to protect their way of life.
