MÈRE COURAGE
Bertolt Brecht, Lisaboa Houbrechts

A BUSY AND DISTURBING PANORAMA OF THE WAY WAR DISTORTS, REACHING INTO THE VERY DEPTHS OF A HUMAN BEING.
Anne Fierling is the ultimate expert in the art of crossing enemy lines with her canteen cart. She sells food, beverages and essential items, and the war being waged around her provides her with an invaluable source of income. Such is the heroine, Mother Courage, in one of Bertolt Brecht’s best known plays, set at the time of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). The cunning canteen lady does business without asking too many questions. The director Lisaboa Houbrechts sees her as an ambivalent character, both guilty and a victim with her two children killed, both worker and mother. Her production of the complete version of the play including the songs composed by Paul Dessau shows how war is not just a matter for nation states and populations, but also wreaks havoc within the family circle and in the private domain of the female body.
